Why even buy a NAS?

I  have one out here to stream media from to my tablet and it performs wonderfully.

 anyone care to elaborate on the pros/cons/capabilities of a whs2011 box vs  a synology NAS, for streaming media to your TV, phone, tablet, htpc

I think the number 1 con is software. You can use pretty much any method you want from a WS box. And it will/should have the grunt to transcode it on the fly too

It all depends on what kind of ecosystem you're in.  At home, I have a WHS 2011 that streams to a couple of HTPC's and other Windows clients.  Works great.  Out here in the 'Stan, I have a two bay Synology DS1212 that is connected to a Linksys router that streams avi, mp4, mp3 files to my Android table and phone.  Works great.

 

The NAS is just a smaller more compact solution.  No need for that many updates and I like it a lot.
