"Stand Alone Drive" maybe means no transfer kit or cables?

That could be it but I have always heard that referred to as OEM or a "bare" drive.

Well I sure hope it doesn't mean it won't work unles it is the only drive hooked up to the mobo.

Nice one Kyd!!

OK here it is.  I will say before pasting this that I think it is a redundant term and is not really needed in 99.9% of cases.

Stand-alone SSS is solid state storage that is not integrated with spinning hard drive disks as in a hybrid flash array.  Although a solid state drive (SSDs) that is installed internally in a server can technically be considered stand-alone SSS, most people associate the term with external solid state storage that serves as a cache appliance. In general, the function of stand-alone storage is to transfer data.

EDIT;

I correct myself. This is a quote from the Kingston Press Release.  ". It is available as either a stand-alone drive or in an upgrade kit to make installation easy and quick." ."     So You were correct guys!!

SchoonDoggy gave us a list here when he posted his performance tests on a SK Hynix:

  • Samsung
  • Toshiba
  • SK Hynix
  • Micron/Crucial/Intel

Wow, a "good or bad" question and I got this thread!  Nice thread guys!  Will mention this on tonight's podcast.

I only do rebates when I feel I absolutely must! I dislike them very much.

I was going to use this as an OS drive. Win 8 or maybe Essentials 2012.

It will be fine Dave for an OS drive.  If memory serves me correct, the write backs to this drive are in the 350 range while the Pro's from Samsung approach the 600 range.
