Time to upgrade my router from linksys WRT54G. But to what?

You might be able to find a version of DD-WRT that would run on a WRT54G, but I don't think you can run Tomato. The issue is that there isn't enough onboard flash ROM. The WRT54GL is specifically made to run 3rd party firmware.

 

Like you said though, those units do not do N wireless.

I know that I had tomato running on mine. But that was a long time ago and maybe the firmware has grown in size since then. Now I recycled the router as a repeater running a dd-wrt.

Over the years, Linksys/Cisco has reduced the amount of flash ROM, I presume to save money. DD-WRT has released some 'reduced feature set' versions of their firmware that take up less room, but even they won't fit into some of the WRT54 units. Thankfully, they have retained the GL version for the those who want the open source firmware.

 

Also, my understanding is that Ubiquiti fully supports DD-WRT.
