HSS Meetup 2013 - Sept 21st - Indy

Recommended Posts

Just listened to HSS show 220. I have registered for the meet-up and I am looking forward to attending in September if at all possible. An overseas trip may interfere, unfortunately, I won't know for a few months yet. Should we assume it is free again this year? Or should we be prepared to kick-in a nominal charge / donation for bagels and lunch?

Lots of great ideas out there already. More than humanly possible in a one-day event, I am sure. But perhaps a few more could be thrown into the pot for consideration:

UPS and auto-shutdown software demo (pull the plug!) (Powerchute?)

Crashplan on WHS2011 and 2012E

Drobo / Synology / QNap comparison and discussion

Discussion comparing Surface Pro and at least one other Win8 Pro tablet or convertible

Already listed, but another vote for DrivePool / Drivebender comparison and discussion

Discussion on remote access methods using native 2011 / 2012E technology and with third party tools

Collect and share (anonymous) information on what people who attend are using in their WHS / NAS world, how many drives, how big, what brands and like / dislike, what model UPS and how big, how much used space,  how much storage in the cloud and where (only significant space, not everyone's 2G in something just to check it out); remote access tools (iOS, Android, whatever), etc.

A presentation by someone who has moved off WHS V1 or 2011 entirely onto a NAS solution. What are they doing for file backup on and off site? What are they doing for bare metal restore, or living without it? That sort of thing.

A discussion on video owning / streaming / ripping / viewing or extender options / etc.; I just listened to the episode that mentioned Ultraviolet and VuDu and Wal-Mart disk-to-digital and would like to hear more about all that

Better understanding of the network access in the meeting room would be nice. Maybe a hand-out when we pick up our registration material / badge / whatever? A common place to dump pictures taken at the meet-up?

Hey Guys! Look at this! My friend Mark Terborg gave you ten more reasons why you should attend the 2013 HSS meetup!   http://www.recordedtvhd.com/forum/#nabble-td5708159

Just got the "homeserver" rate of $99 plus tax for king bed room.  Told them didn't need the two queen beds, no kids no spouse that weekend!

My plans to come to the meet up had it a road block when I was diagnosed with cancer in June.  However, today I received great news that it has not spread to the lymph nodes and therefore, not spread.

Me (your second favorite surface geeks co-host) and the wife (Mrs. Shownotes as Dave calls her) will be in Indy for this.  Looking forward to meeting all of you, and talking tech.

and CandianGeek, you will not be the lone Candian as my wife is born and bred...

A class or discussion on setting up pfsense and plugin options for pfsense. A meet and greet Friday evening or Saturday morning. A discussion on home network setup. This discussion could go into suggestions to better improve home networks. I also like jsox's suggestions as well.

I am planning on driving to Indianapolis Friday and open to suggestions to hotel rooms for my stay Friday and Saturday.

I am planning on driving to Indianapolis Friday and open to suggestions to hotel rooms for my stay Friday and Saturday.

A safe bet is somewhere near the Fry's in Fishers, Indiana.  We used a hotel near there for the 2nd Meetup.

I booked the Conrad in downtown Indy.  Don't know much about the area, but I am sure it can't be to far from where we end up.

I think that one would be......the hotel Dave used last year was just fine and convenient.

I have been looking for recommendations for a place to stay for the meetup. I will look into the Conrad downtown Indy. Is anyone else that is going to the meetup planning on staying here?

Any other suggestions for a place to stay?

Ping Dave on the name of the hotel we used last year.  Just off the interstate, lots of places within walking distance to eat, and the Fry's is 1 minute away.  Anything downtown is going to be 30 minutes away I would think.

Has a placed been finalized? I know it is going to be in Indianapolis. I am looking for a place to walk/stagger back easily.

Unbox ML110 Gen10 at RESET Meetup

This is a video of the unboxing of the HPE ProLiant ML1100 Gen10 at the RESET Meetup #Indy2017 on September 30, 2017.  More to follow in the Forums in the future.

Meetup 2017 Registration - $20 This fee guarantees you a spot at Meetup 17 as well as breakfast and lunch. You may have heard the story but one year I didn't charge a small fee and a ton of people showed up for the free food and a ton of others cancelled! So I had way too much leftover BBQ! This is a PayPal transaction. If you would like something different please PM me.  Use this link - PayPal $20

Also, if you are a Patron, https://patreon.com/davidmccabe, at the $5 or higher level, you have a ticket to Meetup 17. You do need to RSVP though. Please use a PM here, email, Patreon PM, etc. Patrons are also invited to a RESET HQ Tour on Friday night. Come on all, sign up as Patrons!!! I purchase food based on your RSVP's and PayPal reservations! Sometimes folks can't make it after reserving, that is fine. The earlier you can reserve your spot the better!

Also, use this thread to secure transportation with each other. If you are flying in, let us know your details and maybe you can hitch a ride with someone. If you want to carpool, drop your location here and maybe someone else close to you can share a ride and some gas. You never know!

I'm currently speaking with area hotels. I'm trying to secure a group rate at the closest, Hyatt Place. There are several events happening this weekend and they seem to be fairly booked but I'll let you know for sure. Lastly, RESET stickers for all! That's why you're coming right?

If you are new to Meetup I can tell you it is a great time. We have equipment demos and a lot of folks bring their servers, media gear, etc. There is always something new and ALWAYS something to talk about. Remember Meetup 16? I dropped a bombshell on everyone and published the final episode of HSS Podcast and launched RESET Podcast. All in about 30 minutes! I was super emotional during that and it was totally unplanned! Did anyone film that? You never know what surprises I have in store for you!

Most folks try to arrive Friday prior to Meetup. We try to meet at the local Fry's and then go out to eat. Saturday is Meetup and then we converge on the Microsoft Store right after. Usually, 6 PM. Saturday night we try to go out to the local Irish Pub for some fish and chips and then disperse. Sunday morning a group of use meet at a, not so local, Waffle House for some breakfast. (love this part!)
My area is exploding in growth so you might want to bring your family to shop and explore the area. They are also invited to have lunch at Meetup. If you want to do that let me know and I can arrange that with you. I've found that most spouses don't want to stick around as the geekery tends to get very thick and unbearable for them. Ha ha ha!

I mentioned it on the show last week but now it is official. I will be in the Kansas City Microsoft Store, Saturday afternoon, December 1st. I have two presentations to do on Windows 8 and SkyDrive. One at Noon and the other at 3pm. Also going to podcast live from the store at 5pm and working on some interviews with the store manager. If you are in the area and can join me, let me know here. We will do a mini meetup early or late depending on who can show up. Maybe I can even get Microsoft to come up with a few giveaways?

I would like to gauge interest in a 2012 meetup. I envision it to be on a Saturday in mid October and located somewhere in the Indianapolis Indiana area. Please let me know in a reply if you:

RSVP no matter what the date.
      Tentative
      Can't make it this year.

This will help me decide on a location and what vendor support I'll need. Hit me with questions if you have them. Thanks!

UPDATED: The 2nd Annual Meetup will be held on October, 20th, in a location TBD. 95% sure it will be the North Indianapolis area. Page 2 of this post is where RSVPs start. Pleast RSVP if you know you will attend. Thank you!
