N40L ram compatibility

Hello! I have purchased the N40L microserver and I am thinking to add extra ram.I would like to add for beginning a 8gb stick like corsair ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006XB56VI ) and in the future I want to have the option to upgrade to 16gb with a same memory.

My question is:

Can the machine recognize a 8gb ram running from one slot or does it need the whole set of 16gb to run properly?

Thank you very much!

Thank you my friend for your help! I am using the hp bios,so I can't use more than 8 gb,right? Why I can't take one module with 8 gb?

It's hot or miss with the 8GB sticks.  Reboots will sometimes only recognize the full 16 but will always see 8.

I am only running 8GB (non-ECC, G.Skill) myself.  However, I have read of someone running the equivalent of the above Kingston ECC RAM, but in a 16GB kit (as opposed to the 8GB one), and having it work.

I agree with jmwills though that 16GB of RAM has been hit-or-miss on the Microservers, enough that HP doesn't recognize 16GB as a supported solution.  If you're going to try it, I don't recommend using just any kit; search for what people have tried that has worked.  I would also buy in a matched kit immediately, rather than one module at a time.
