HP Smart Array P410 Controller & 3/4TB drives

I have not made a RAID 5 array larger than 4 drives on a P410, I cant see any reason why it would not work.

I did find one thing I did not expect, the RAID expansion function is only supported with the battery backed cache modules, this is from the quickspec guide;

'Addition of the battery or flash backed cache upgrade enables array expansion, logical drive extension, RAID migration, and stripe size migration.'

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13201_na/13201_na.HTML

This is the best source for information on how to expand a RAID set;

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00729544/c00729544.pdf

I think pages 14 through 17 have the data you are looking for.

Keep in mind, I don't think you can reduce a RAID set on the P410. If you test adding a drive to a RAID set you cant take it out, without destroying the array.

If you could, I think it would probably require the HP SAAP expansion license key be installed, which adds additional features in the controller.  It's a few hundred dollars; I can't justify the cost.

You are right. This function comes with SAAP and I can get a license for 75 euro here in Europe. Still not sure if it's worth...

I have ordered HP Smart Array Advanced Pack and HP Smart Array Advanced Pack 2.0 Evaluation License Key. Those are valid for 60 days and are free. Should I need to reduce RAID set by pulling the drive out I will activate SAAP by evaluation key and shrink an array. Haven't tried yet but planning to test it in weekend.

Advanced Capacity Expansion (ACE) Advanced Capacity Expansion complements the conventional capacity expansion feature of Smart Array controllers by allowing customers to perform two new operations to either shrink or move existing arrays. The Shrink Array operation allows customers to remove drives from an existing array. The Move Array operation allows customers to transfer the contents of a disk array from one set of physical drives to a second set of physical drives.
