N40L memory compatibility

Quick question, on the N40L, do I need ECC memory or can I get away with regular Non-ECC for less $$.

You didn't state if you were looking for 2x2GB, 2x4GB or 2x8GB.

 

Hope this helps.  FYI, I have been running the Corsair 2x8GB sticks in my N40L and have not seen any issues.

thanks Joe, I am not sure what size at this time. Maybe just 2x4 or 8g. I don't plan on doing any vm's as of yet.

I just batting around the idea of the N40L, since the price is low.

Maybe re-do my V1 or install 2011 instead. I like my v1.

Sorry for getting to this late…..  For a production machine with live data I would spend the extra few $’s and get the ECC RAM & I wouldn’t get less than 8GB.  If you’re building a lab/play box then it’s not that important IMHO especially if you want to make a “Hyper-V Play Box” with 16GB – though I think
the 8GB ECC is probably still the better way to go so that you have more options in the future if you want to repurpose it to production.

I found that my ECC memory wasn't that much more expensive than non-ECC. I think that it was only $30 more expensive overall, and when I was spending over $1K on the whole setup with disks and RAID Card etc ... I figured that it wasn't worth the saving. I was very flush back then though ... lols now I'm broke.

I notice most thread talk about 8 gig of memory only on the N40L ... Is there any 16gig that will work with the N40L ones? I read most of the thread but haven't really found any currents ones talking about supported ones.

My only personal experience is with:

16GB RAM – G.Skill F3-1333C9D-16GAO http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231556&Tpk=N82E16820231556

This worked most of the time in my 2nd N40L (4 out of 7 posts I’d see 16GB while the other 3 I’d see 8GB) and a little better in my 1st N40L and my N54L (~5 or 6 out of 7 posts I saw 16GB) – this is from memory of over 2 years ago – I just recently got back (family member had been using it) that N40L that had the G.Skill in it but the BIOS has been updated since I last saw it so I will have to see when I work on it in a few weeks.

Thank you for replying back to me. I looked at the amazon site because of have some gift cards that I received from family to buy stuff. I did a search on the memory you mention about the 16gm ram.

Plus if you don't mind me asking if I decided not to get the 16gig I know for sure the 8gig works perfect for home lab server. Would you mind telling me from the amazon site which ones would work with N40L server please.

The only 8GB experience I have is the KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G that is in my Sig line below on one of my N40L's.  I never tried just 1 8G stick in the MicroServer.
