Correct. I would guess the power consumption is around 10% more for 50% more storage.

It's even better than that. The specs on wdc.com show the exact same power requirements and dissipation for 2 and 3 TB. Not a surprise.

That's the path I was going down. Three 3TB drives would be as energy efficient as three 2TB drives.

You might want to compare the power requirements of Barracudas and Reds. I suspect that's where you will see a difference, mainly because WD is emphasizing how power efficient the Reds are.

More mass means more power but the power draw is so low they would have to be using very accurate equipment to measure a difference.

I think it is a subjective choice, but I sure like those WD Reds! Why? Just a prejudice of mine. The only data I have to come to this conclusion is what I have read about them. I think I tend to overlook the bad reviews. How logical is that? Not very, but I still like the design and their intended use. I will only know over time.
