WD 2TB Red Drives 109 Sr the 'Egg

Recommended Posts

Reds are designed for NAS applications correct? Do they hold a performance advantage over green drives or are they about the same?

To add just a little, Red drives are not designed to be the fastest out there. They're designed for 24/7 reliable operation in NAS-type applications. One of their biggest features is dynamic anti-vibration. The drives have a system that detects, and automatically mitigates, performance & reliability robbing vibration.

One way this is so important is when you have multiple drives in an enclosure. Vibration in multi-drive installations is typically amplified by the interaction between the drives - one drive's vibration is picked up sympathetically by one or more of the other drives. This can greatly shorten the life of the drives. Bringing dynamic anti-vibration to such a low price point is a milestone for the industry.
