What RocketRaid Card to get?

I plan to build a RAID 5 array using 8 x 3TB drives. I'm trying to figure out what card will give me the best performance for the money. (I.e. not worth spending more more if it isn't going to actually increase my performance).

So of these three Highpoint RocketRaids which would offer me the best bang for the buck?

Options I'm considering:

- RocketRaid 2320

- RocketRaid 2720

- RocketRaid 3530

Thanks

My vote is with the 2720. simple to manage and will handle those 8 drives.

A bit hard to choose between the 2720 and 3530. The 2720 supports 6Gbps drives, but the 3530 is full hardware RAID. The 2720 should have higher throughput to the drives themselves, but the 3530 should offload work from the CPU.

Given that it's a Home Server, I think I would lean to the 2720 and 6Gbs drives. Typically, WHS computers don't have a high CPU load anyway, so the RAID calculations it has to do probably won't affect performance much.

Now, if you're planning to do a lot of transcoding, especially real-time streaming, that could change the story a lot.

I agree, stick with the 2720. It is a more robust and faster version of the 2680. Unless you need 12 drives, stick with the 2720.

In the end it all comes down to $$. I lost a drive last week on the 2720 and it was a snap to rebuild it.

  • 4 weeks later...

The only difference between the 2680 and the 2720 is speed?

In a WHS setting, would this be a huge difference in performance?

Reason I ask is I got a 2680 for $40 and wondering if it's something I should even be bothered with...

Great thread guys. I thought I would put in the links and prices to give more perspective of these choices.

Technically speaking, there are not issues with the 2680 and it is a great card. Speed is the main issue. Unless you compare them you will not notice so if you can it for $40 it might be hard to pass up. You can always swap it out later without affecting your raid.

BTW, look for the SGL version, cheaper
