2.5" SSD in N40L

Recommended Posts

flyboyco

I have been searching, but must be using the wrong terms because I know y'all have done this.

I want replace the stock 250GB drive with an SSD.

How do I install a 2.5" drive in my Microserver without loosing the DVD drive? Is there a cord or bracket to install it in one of the front slots, or is there another SATA slot on the mboard?

I have not removed the HDD brackets to look at the board yet.

Joe_Miner installed his SSD underneath the DVD drive slot using Duck Tape. :D

Joe_Miner is using the on on board SATA port for his SSD. Then he use an eSATA to SATA cable so he can use the eSATA port from the back of the case. I believe he just snaked the cable through the area for the expansion cards and ran it up to the ODD area. Joe is using the eSATA port for his backup drive (I believe).

BTW - I have also installed an SSD in the area under the ODD bay. I used velcro with adhesive on it to secure the drive in the case. Then it I have to remove it I just pull on it and the velcro releases.

Also, if the only thing you are doing with the DVD drive is ripping movies you might consider an external drive (USB).

cskenney,

Thanks for the info. Good idea with using an external drive for DVD. I do have one around.

Is there a bracket to install in one of the drive bays?

Joe "The N40l King" Miner aka John has done some great write-ups for sure. If I thought it up, he had already done it.

I ended up hetting an Icy Dock 2.5 & 3.5 hot swap bays:

It works awesome. and I get all 6 sata II ports usable.

Here's the eSata to SATA cable here's the cable I used. I like the clips on the SATA end. Just run it through the bracket that holds the pci cards in place.

It works like a treat

Thank you Mark! Seems like the way to go. I would much rather find a way to install the ssd in one of the 4 removable trays and leave the DVD in the 5.25, but it doesn't look like that's an option at this point.

P.S. jazzerjay, I have not yet had a chance to look at all "Joe "The N40l King" Miner's" posts yet but I will eventually get to all them... i think
