Which OS is better?

Recommended Posts

Ordered a N40L this evening, should be with me shortly.

My question is which OS is better?

I'm going to use this sever as NAS, web server and download machine.

Currently I got the following OS:

1, Windows Homer Server v1

2, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Datacenter-Enterprise-Standard

3, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard-Enterprise-Datacenter-Web

4, Microsoft Windows 7 Professional

Which one should I use?

THX

However, you would better off to drop the NAS part and run as a file server. 2008R2 over 2008 simply because of the newer features and Standard over Enterprise because you can only have 8GB RAM in the N40L. Standard will support up to 32 and Enterprise is just stupid crazy on the amount of RAM it supports.

Win7 Professional is not a Server platform.

Stay away from WHS v1. Between the PC restore hassles/failures and and demigrator, it's better left to history.

With what you listed I would say a combo. Option 3 running a hyper-v with win 7 pro. As the down load machine assuming its torrent. That way you an scan the downloads prior to exposing the to your data.

Of the choices you listed I'd look at 2008R2-Std but why aren't you considering WHS-2011 which is basically 2008R2-Foundation and can be found for $49

Agreed about 2011. Cheap, stable.

That was my first reaction. WHS2011 will give you the client PC backup option the others won't.

He said he already had the other OS's and client backup was not in his needs requirement.

Even so, I think WHS 2011 for $50 should do well for him. And I say that because I assume it'd be a lighter footprint than either of the other 2 server OS's. Plus W7 is not a server product even though I'd once considered using it as such. And I still say to stay away from v1.

I resemble that remark.
