2720SGL help

Recommended Posts

I am looking to buy this card to go along with my new Supermicro case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811152241. My mother board is a Asus P8X68-v LX and only has 2 x pci-e @16, 2 x pci-e @1 and 3 x pci slots.

Here is the card info: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816115100

My question is does a smaller 8x card fit in a larger 16x slot?

Thanks in advance.

The short answer is YES. On the larger x slots, they are mostly compatible with anything smaller. Should not be an issue at as that is the default way I run all of mine. This is a great card by the way. Good luck with it. Check out the BYOB videos before you set it up.

Ok I received my 2720SGl today and installed it in my setup. Works like a charm. It is alot faster then I expected. My build consists of the following just incase someone is interested.

OS

WHS2011 http://www.newegg.co...443&Tpk=WHS2011

Motherboard

P8Z68-V LX http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813131781

CPU

Core i5-2500K http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819115072

Case

SuperMicro CSE-743T-500B http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811152241

Hard Drives

OS - Barracuda 7200rpm 1TB http://www.newegg.co...310005n1a1as-rk

Storage - 8x Barracuda Green 2TB http://www.newegg.co...N82E16822148681

Raid Card

RocketRaid 2720SGL http://www.newegg.co...N82E16816115100

This is set to JBOD. I am letting WHS2011 manage the backups and duplicates. This has worked for me in the past very well.

* The write speeds are ridiculously fast with this card from one server to another over a gigalan network.

Wow, very nice setup. Glad it worked out for you. BTW, WHS 2011 does not duplicate nor will it backup that much data. I would reconfigure your card to a RAID 5 as you presently do not have any protection.

My worry is similar to pcdoc's. You say you do copying from one server to another over your LAN. Is this how your backing up your data? From your statement, "I am letting WHS2011 manage the backups and duplicates" it doesn't seem so. If that is the case, I strongly recommend you implement a real backup strategy (and RAID is NOT a backup strategy, it is simply a reliability feature). Of course, it all depends on how valuable you consider your data, but it's hard to imagine going to all the trouble of setting up a server for data you don't care about.

@pcdoc, Hmm. I have duplication currently turned on and it seems to work? I guess that only way to check it to pull a drive out and hook it up to my pc, I back the server OS partition onto a portable usb hard drive occasionally. At least that is what I have done in v1 and will continue to do.

@ikon, "WHS2011 manage the backups and duplicates" This means computer backups and file duplications.

As long as each computer backup is under 2TB you should be good. I'm not sure about duplications as I never used that feature, in WHSv1 or 2011.
