Hard to go wrong with an LSI/3ware solution. Like most LSI cards, this one has an onboard CPU so it's what I refer to as a real RAID card (as opposed to a Host Bus Adapter). That should give you as much performance as is possible these days (in this case, up to 6 Gb/s!). Post some pics of your build as you progress with it.

I'm thinking I could go broke hanging around you lads.

We all could :) On the bright side, that LSI card is very reasonably priced for a full, hardware RAID sol'n ($250)

Gets out soapbox Steps up Clears throat Your answer is iSCSI An atom d525 can power an open filer iscsi host with separate iscsi targets for whs (one of those lian Li q08 work great but mine is a antec gamer 300) Then your esxI box only needs a USB drive (San disk cruzer fit are the size of a wireless nano dongle) This way you don't need to worry about esxI raid and can literally use a nettop or laptop even for a esxI host Off soap box

Do you have a link for ISCSI download?

Do you have a link for ISCSI download?

I have a write on the openfiler system on the link below

http://y-wing.net:80...penfilerwhs.pdf

you can download the distro from openfiler.com and included in my article is a link to this http://forums.openfi...pic.php?id=2676 which is the write on getting it to boot via USB thumb drive, not neccesary but i prefer so that all of my disk are just for storage and presentation.

Edit with the new distro's you will need a 16GB drive on the older you can use an 8 or 4GB flashdrive

Thanks for the quick response. Will give it a shot. You can never have too much storage.

Couple intersting budget boards with on this (though old desktops also work well

ZOTAC NM10-B-E Intel Atom D510 at 99.99

Comes with 6 Sata 2 with software raid not ideal but a start plus a PCI-Express slot (sort of rare on atoms) so you could also have an 8 port raid there so 14 drives using an atom proc down plus has a pci express 1 slot so potential for adding a single or duel port nic card. Not bad for a 100 bucks

Also Jetway has the NF9D-2700 but only pci but supports a daughter card so you can get 5 NICs and then a older PCI Raid card for 6 drive and plenty of seperate channels for band

would you guys virtualise openfiler ? dont want to dediacate my new i5-2400 only for a nas server. trying to see the best way to do it.

I got myself a lsi 9240-8i on that esxi5.0 box. seam that vt-d is working on my p8h61-m. What would it be the best if i let openfiller see the 9240-8i, or use esxi as datastore ? running that card in raid-5.

Guest no-control

Some damn good ideas here. Nice link on the iSCSI makes me want to try it..... I'm curious how stable a VM of openfiler is and just use pass through (not sure OF will run on Hyper-V)
