I'm with the other poster above...look at Veeam backup. Its an amazing product, and the free version should meet all your needs. Beats the socks off of any manual process above. I've used it in the enterprise at a much larger scale. Best VM backup solution I've used.

I would suggest custom powershell / batch files using either 7z or WinRAR. I wrote custom backup for my old n36l and its absolutely amazing. The prerequisite is that you can stop the MSSQL service while copying the database files and start it afterwards. However, given that, you got a total control backup solution and can batch various areas in to different backup files, plus have the added security of parity layers in many archieve formats.


ps. you can copy vhd while vms are running .. . so its easy to script

 

pps. I never used incremental at home, I guess that's why it works for me.
