There was as series on the Science Channel Sunday morning about the Saturn V so now I know what some of the buildings are where I work. Very interesting program as I was a enthusiast in the 60's and wish I had the smarts to have been an astronaut.

I recall seeing a show where the engineers designing the Saturn got stuck trying to figure out how get it into orbit. They realized it was too heavy for the fuel it contained and would never reach escape velocity. Finally, they went to visit a retired rocket scientist (I think he was retired) to get his opinion and he simply said, "Easy, build it in stages and drop off the stages as they empty so you don't have to carry the dead weight into orbit.". As I understand it, there were some embarrassed faces all around the group.

That and it showed how they cut weight in between the stages with nothing more than honeycombed fiberboard.
