Just read an article on the Win8 build blog that goes into nice detail about how Advanced Format (AF) drives, like the WD EARS, handle older OS'. The section Read-Modify-Write is particularly interesting I think (I presume this is exactly what happens when you put a jumper on pins 7 & 8 on a WD EARS drive).
