Discussion: Installing apps on servers?

While listening to the HSS Ep170 was starting to question the viability of writing add-ins for 2011. With the discussion of storage and Server 08 or the idea of another Windows version machine as network storage instead of using a Windows Home Server, I started thinking why I would want to create a new app that was tied to 2011 and couldn’t be used on an other Windows “servers”..

What are people feeling about installing service based applications on their “servers” instead of going with an add-in? Especially if the apps could be admin-ed without physically touching the server.

With Windows/Server 8 coming, I can't see the viability of making add-ins any more. WHS has such a checkered history it just doesn't make sense to me.

The more you try to make WHS an application server, the more resources you need. I agree with ikon, Server 8 could be the last nail in the coffin for WHS.
