The only drawback to the WDTV players has been the interface. I put a homebrew on mine to make it look more "MyMovies"ish and I can also select what folders/PCs it can access and add the username/password in the config. This makes it easier for the non-tech and prettier to look at. It has been by far the most ubiquitous in codec and format acceptance of any media player/extender I've tried short of a dedicated HTPC all in the size of a couple decks of cards and completely silent.

Soooo, I picked out an AC adapter from my collection box and now have a powered up WDTV. Now, what firmware are you running, the WDlxTV, or something else? I ask because the author says WDlxTV doesn't change the interface, so I figured it must be something else.

WDLXTV-PLUS. Currently I'm running 0.4.7.3 but there is an even newer version out I just haven't loaded yet.

I'm not sure where it could be said the interface doesn't change, but it's definitely no MyMovies/MediaBrowser. However, it does do DVD chapter skipping from VIDEO_TS folders correctly.

Quoting the author from http://wdlxtv.com/wdlxtv-live/

Now you should note that cosmetically the only thing you’ll notice different after installing WDLXTV-Live is the background changing, and if you have list view selected the default is 8 instead of 7.

If you haven't bought a new player yet, take a look at the TViX range.. I have the 6600N (2 years old). It plays all formats in Full HD and in 5.1 Dolby Dig or DTS sound. the current units will playback 7.1 channel sound.

It handles BD ISO seamlessly (on an NFS link or from local HD) and has a PVR bulit in.. They also come with LAN & WLAN out of the box..

I have a faily high end Denon home theatre set up here and the sound from the media play is superb. The picture is outstanding too.

Highly recommend it.

I am going to have to second (or third, depending on how many XMBC fans you count) XMBC. With that being said, I have had terrible luck with the windows version of XBMC. I have set up a few low-interaction XMBC consoles for friends (no login screen or GUI, just boots straight into XBMC) based on stripped-down versions of debian, and so far of the three I made, 2 are still active after 2+ years (one died due to an incident involving a toddler and a defective sippy cup).

I need to get around to posting some pictures and/or videos of my setup in action. I finally blew away windows on the HTPC and got an XMBC up and running for myself.

      Hi guys,

Maybe you can help me out.
I'm trying to install a WHS v1 - just for fun. I do have the license key but the installation media is long gone.
I looked at ebay, but people are charging insane prices for the OS. $100 for a 10yr piece of software. No thanks.
So, anyone having the installation media for a WHS v1?
And, no WHS2011 is not an option - I do have that version available - I'm looking for the original version.

      Kind regards,

Xbox Video sucks just as much as Xbox Music. Would someone PLEASE make a video player that not only does a good job of playing videos, but also organizing them? Right now Xbox Video takes all your movies and tv shows and throws them all into "other". EXPlay was coming along nicely, but still needed improvement to be functional and now the dev has dropped off the planet. We now have StormPlay, which has some bugs, but he is trying and working hard to iron them out. But we need options. It should look nice I'm a metro-way also, and do a good job of putting movies together and then splitting your tv shows into their respective shows and seasons. Like os said before, eXPlay was looking great and used artwork from each movie and show as backgrounds as you searched through them. It got its information from tvdb and IMDB. Unfortunately the API for those sites has changed sometime ago, leaving that app crippled and the dev seems no where to be found. This is ridiculous though that 7 months later, we are asking for basic media organizational abilities. Don't even get me started on Xbox Music.

      Hi there!

I gotta say, I've always been skeptical of 3rd parties hosting my data "for free" because lets face it, when something is truly "free" you're the "product." However, I've found that apps like Seafile and ownCloud just don't have enough functionality. I wanted to make an application that has all of the same functionality of Google, OneDrive, or Dropbox that fits entirely on my home-server. That's why I've been working on a private open-source solution to a very public and closed-source problem.

With HRCloud2, a user can completely control their data from a safe and reliable place that they can trust. For ultimate performance just point your Cloud Directory at a RAID array or network storage device. It's flexible, lightweight, fast, and written in plain-ol' PHP and Javascript (with a little Ajax and JQuery sprinkled in). No frameworks, nothing special to learn. There's even an API, so you can make your own GUI's, browser plugins, desktop apps, mobile apps, ect. I can't lie, though,,, HRCloud2 is a work-in-process and although it's safe and fit for use, some of it's development features may be buggy or cumbersome at times. At the time of this writing I'm working on implementing an App Launcher, Soon anyone will be able to do Google-things in true privacy, from anywhere. Being written mostly in Jscript and PHP, HRCloud2 Apps would be extremely simple to write and a great way to get into coding.

Support the little guy and try this app. If you're dissapointed open an issue on Github and I'll try to make it better! Thanks for the clicks!

Well I received my shield on Saturday and immediately hooked it up.

      Pros:
      1. Setup was painless.
      2. The performance was amazing.  By far the quickest I have seen from any media playback device.
      3. Playback quality was great.  I did not see any issues and it played every bit as good as my HTPC.
      4. DTS-Ma audio pass through perfectly to the reciever.

      Cons:
      1. TrueHD sound tracks still not supported which means 30% of my existing movies do not pass through the receiver and end up playing as PCM not the native sound track.
      2. Audio controls are a bit quirky in Plex.  There seems to be an overlap in functionality and they do not necessarily behave as you would expect.

Once again we have another one of these devices that claims pass through that does not work correctly.  Yes it is the closest I have seen yet but it is not quite there yet.  Not sure if I am going to keep this.
