WHS 2011 OS RAID 1 question

Hi Guys,

I plan on mirroring two 160GB 2.5" drives for the OS of my WHS 2011 build but I have a question on how to do that. I have a HighPoint RAID card for the data drives but I was thinking of using the MB RAID for the OS. I've heard some negative comments about using the MB RAID from the BYOB guys but figured it was more towards the data drives. So are there any reservations about using the MB RAID for the OS or should I just go ahead and get another HighPoint controller for that as well?

As always thanks for the help.

What negative comments have you heard from us? I use it all the time. Just not right now as I'm actually just using the OS to RAID1 a pair of 250GB systems drives for my Server. For RAID1 it is actually easier and more flexible to manage using the OS.

The negative comments really came from me and associated only with setting up a RAID 5/10 not mirroring. No problem with an OS mirror or a data drive mirror. The only negative I have seen is that it re-syncs every time you have an accidental shut down but that is more of annoyance. I have using the MB for data mirroring for quite some time. Hope that clears it up.

Nice to hear for me as well. I just implemented two 250G Maxtor drives in RAID1 using the ICH7R on my Asus P5W64-WS mobo. At this point it's the fastest WHS2011 box I've ever run.

Hi everyone, today I wanted to install esxi 6.7 to try out the various functions, my question is the following, I have a server where I have installed esxi in an SSD and I have two other 4 tb disks so 8 tb total.  I would like to make sure that when I create a virtual machine in this case I will install the various virtual machines in the SSD and use the two disks for data.  So how can I do this?  Thank you very much for those who can help me.

Looking for a quick answer here from someone in the know...

I upgraded some of the internals of my Gen8 server and at the same time I did a BIOS reset as I had forgotten the password that I had set years ago. When booting back up the upgraded hardware was detected and fine but I received Error 1784 - Drive Array - Logical Drive Failure. I believe this is due to a setting change in the BIOS and not anything hardware related. I have gone into IP/SSA and see the array needs to be rebuilt. I had all drives configured as single RAID0. It says all data will be lost if I reconfigure this but I remember reading somewhere on here that the data will be fine if I reconfigure as RAID0.

I do have a backup of course, but it’s not a high availability mirror and will take some time to get back the way I had it, so just want to know if it’s safe to reconfigure the RAID0 without erasing the drives. I have tried pulling the drives out and connecting them to another PC and they are fine. Can anyone tell me which options to choose to get these back to normal and remove the flashing red light?

      Thanks 😶

      Hi All,
I have built a WHS 2011 server.  All was well except my Win 10 PC would not back up to it.  Installing the KB281721 hotfix was done on the server and part of the process was to reinstall the connector on the PC.  I uninstalled from control panel.  I then had a ton of problems connecting to WHS 2011 connect webpage.  This turned out to be being blocked by the server windows firewall, which started working ok when I disabled the private firewall.
Now the connector web page comes up and initiates the install.  Connect a computer wizard starts up and asks me for the server name or IP.
Neither work.  Whether I enter the server name or the IP it says the server could not be located.
If I open the remote access web page from any device inside or outside LAN, I can connect to the server and carry out all you would expect.  I can connect via RDP, I can ping the LAN IP, I can ping the FQDN and WAN IP.
The server is showing in Network and all shares are browse-able.
I installed the find my server wizard and that failed to find it even using the command line switch with the <servername>
So how do I get the server connector up and running.
I have added theses ports to the router
      65510
3389  disabled at the moment until I can secure it better
      4125
      443
      80
I found 3 copies of windows home server in the listed devices and have removed all of them.

I am at a loss as to what to do next.  Hoping some experienced WHS 2011 server people know what to do next.......

      Greetings,

I'm new to the HPMSG8 world and so far I'm loving it. I have a stock Xeon with 16G of aftermarket memory with iLO patched to 2.70. Next up is adding a RAID card, so I can put my boot SSD on the onboard RAID. I picked up a LSI SAS9211-8i on Amazon, but am struggling to flash it to IT mode on the MicroServer. Is this even possible? Unfortunately, the only other system I have with PCI slots is 32-bit.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
