I see many of you seem to really like these cards. Well i'm just starting yes yet again to look at what parts I sould get for my new WHS2011 build.

Has anyone used this card with 3Tb drives in a Raid 5 configuration?

Not yet. I have only one 3T drive so I could not test it. I certainly plan to do that at some point as I am curious as well. I doubt it will be a problem but it is a lot to spend on drive to not have it work. It is still a better value to to just add more 2T drive as you loose on drive for parity. 3 x 3T = 6T ($450), 4 x 2T = 6T ($340). Of course you have to consider you case space but for now the value proposition is in the 2T drives. At some point, I will have to go there but for now to roughly equal my storage space in 3T drives it would cost me about $900 vs the $640 using 8 x 2T drives.

  • 1 month later...

Well I build mine with 4x 3Tb Drives and all seems good this leaves me another 4 ports for more expansion later or even a 2nd raid see if I can hold out until 4tb drives some out.

As for price it was not as bad as you have it works out to about $5 extra per Tb but for me leaving more room in case and ports on card makes it worth it

Great to know. Going through allot of storage lately so I may have to look at 3T fairly soon. Thanks for the update.

Sadly that would be painful for me as I have a heck of a lot of 2TB drives...Can't see myself just taking out the 2TB drives to replace them with 3TB...I would have to replace all 5 drives. The 3TB drives would need to come down significantly for me to do that.

Once the 2TB drives are 2 years old, tell the finance dept that they need to be replaced as part of normal life cycle maintenance ;)

I have a 2680SGL which I was going to use for my WHS 2011. I was thinking of getting a second one for another system for redundancy but I see that the 2720SGL might be the better way to go? Is that just the SATA 3 (6Gps) version of this card?

@Kman you might also want to consider the 2720 instead.

Yep, just the Sata 3 version of the card. If you want RAID 10 or just more storage, just add another card and drives and you are good to go. I believe you can convert from 5 to 10 through the software in the card. Backup first of course but I am fairly sure it can be done.

Yep I bught the card before the drives and now I think I should have done the other way around. I just can't see paying for another card unless someone wants a very slightly used card lol also when I looked the price was about 50% more but that might have just been up here in Canada. Not that it was that costly just did not know I would be buying SATA3 drives.

Maybe Microsoft was right in their analysis of 2TB drives......it could be just enough. However, if the 3TB hit the $89 price point, I'm in.

Hi everyone, today I wanted to install esxi 6.7 to try out the various functions, my question is the following, I have a server where I have installed esxi in an SSD and I have two other 4 tb disks so 8 tb total.  I would like to make sure that when I create a virtual machine in this case I will install the various virtual machines in the SSD and use the two disks for data.  So how can I do this?  Thank you very much for those who can help me.

Looking for a quick answer here from someone in the know...

I upgraded some of the internals of my Gen8 server and at the same time I did a BIOS reset as I had forgotten the password that I had set years ago. When booting back up the upgraded hardware was detected and fine but I received Error 1784 - Drive Array - Logical Drive Failure. I believe this is due to a setting change in the BIOS and not anything hardware related. I have gone into IP/SSA and see the array needs to be rebuilt. I had all drives configured as single RAID0. It says all data will be lost if I reconfigure this but I remember reading somewhere on here that the data will be fine if I reconfigure as RAID0.

I do have a backup of course, but it’s not a high availability mirror and will take some time to get back the way I had it, so just want to know if it’s safe to reconfigure the RAID0 without erasing the drives. I have tried pulling the drives out and connecting them to another PC and they are fine. Can anyone tell me which options to choose to get these back to normal and remove the flashing red light?

      Thanks 😶

      Greetings,

I'm new to the HPMSG8 world and so far I'm loving it. I have a stock Xeon with 16G of aftermarket memory with iLO patched to 2.70. Next up is adding a RAID card, so I can put my boot SSD on the onboard RAID. I picked up a LSI SAS9211-8i on Amazon, but am struggling to flash it to IT mode on the MicroServer. Is this even possible? Unfortunately, the only other system I have with PCI slots is 32-bit.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
