Music Share Bug

Microsoft TechNet Wiki Article posted today addressing this issue:

http://social.techne...essentials.aspx

Will we get a patch?

How will new users/installs be warned of this issue?

I'm not sure that MS actually considers this to be a true bug; I think many @ MS consider this to be a feature, in that they think the majority of users will be happier to have the art updated automatically for them: i.e. that they won't care about the quality very much, if at all. MS, I think, considers it to be a design cholce. For the enthusiasts who care about their meta data, MS has provided info for a workaround. I wouldn't hold my breath for a patch. But, hey, you and others got them to at least acknowledge the issue, so keep after them.... you never know what might happen.

Good luck with it.

How hard is it add a check box in the dashboard settings to allow/disallow WHS to scan and update metadata? I'm glad I knew about this a couple of months ago.. I did allow WHS to update all my MP3 as I wanted to see what kind of changes it did.. Of course its been 2 months and I haven't gotten around to comparing yet... Glad I still on my original mp3s on my little nas drive.

At least you can turn off the task so it doesn't do this going forward..

Off topic but I think i'm going to disable the media sharing of the server and install another DLNA product.... What I dont like with the MS one, I tell it to share my movie share, it scans for music, movies and pictures. It should give an option ok you want to share your movie folder; what kind of media is in....It doesn't need to share all the movie thumbs and sure...

I agree, it shouldn't be hard to add a feature that will disable the task for you by just clicking a button or checkbox or whatever. And yes, the workaround is, finally, at least something.

Do you have any products in mind for media streaming?

Going to take a look at Serviio again. I believe there was a add-in for WHSv1, maybe someday there will be one for WHS2011...

here is a short list of free ones that i know of:

http://www.serviio.org/

http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/

http://www.tvmobili.com

http://tversity.com/ (resource hog)

I've had good results with Twonky but its built-in into my qnap nas and its a major release behind with no plans to update since my qnap box is already 3+ years ago.

I switched to http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Media_Network (JRiver MC)

Great developers, forum and they listen to their users.

Good write-up: http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/Windows-7-Audio-J-River-Media-Center-14-Configuration

Now I can stream FLAC to my Denon 3310 and XBOX360 will get transcoded on the fly.

Theater View for Audio is great and it will download and update its own set of Video/Audio filters for their Video Player.

If only it had support for my Ceton cable Card ... sigh
