Music and Pictures Shares not updating on HTPC

Recommended Posts

st3lvio

I joined and posted my problem on the forum at UsingWindowsHomeServer. But, knowing there are many more eyes watching this forum, I decided to post it here as well.

I posted on the M$ WHS Help Forum here yesterday. I did a bit more troubleshooting last night and have a few more details to add.

So, first off I have a HTPC in my media room running WMC7 (Windows Media Center) with 1 XBOX360 in my bedroom acting as an extender. Under WHSv1 my Music, Pictures, Videos, Recorded TV were added into the default WIn7 Library's and WMCv1 picked them up without issue. When adding media to my server, WMC would update immediately. This has worked great on both the client (HTPC) and on the extender (XBOX360) for a long time now. Until, WHS2011 upgrade. :(

I upgraded to WHS2011. I have a Win7 Ultimate workstation PC that I do my video encoding, ripping, and WMC is also installed as I test configurations on this machine before rolling it out to my HTPC. My workstation has NO Issues accessing shares from WHS2011.

BUT my HTPC has Problems:

1) My Workstation PC is seeing the \\SERVER\Pictures share in WMC7 as it should, BUT my HTPC will not load this share in WMC7. (All Shares are accessible through Windows Explorer Libraries without issue) BUT on the extender, which is an extension of my HTPC I does load the picture share! I can view my pictures by FOLDER on the extender, BUT on the HTPC when trying to view by folder I get "WMC does not have a Picture folder loaded (something like that) Please add in SETTINGS/MEDIA, etc." It should pick up my default Picture Library automatically (my workstation did) OK, I have done this before, added the folder, it goes through an updating process for 20 minutes or so 1% - 100% with zero files being added. After it updates, nothing gets added. BUT, I can view Pictures in WMC by year & by tag (although it also shows pictures - media backdrops & folder.jpg for my videos - these are NOT in my PICTURE Library!) and I can view by date as well, BUT not by FOLDER (My folders are set up by YEAR/FAMILY/ ect. - not complicated at all - I also do not tag any of my personal Pictures) This is where a permission is broken I believe.

2) WMP12 music and WMC music gets updated as it should on my Workstation PC. BUT, on my HTPC, it will NOT update any folders, but only update (add) play lists for each album. I like to view my music by FOLDER in WMP12 as it gives a total count of my collection, and I can see that new albums are being added to the data base when it sync's with the SERVER\Music share.

I'm thinking my problem lies with the PICTURES share not being given READ/WRITE access within WHS2011 dashboard is the problem - BUT I DO HAVE all my media shares READ/WRITE ACCESS to my HTPC and Workstation. I'm thinking there is something BROKE/Corrupted/ or a bug here. Where could I find a registry setting to delete and start over?

I have uninstalled the connector SW from my HTPC-rebooted, removed the computer from the WHS2011 dashboard and started from scratch with the connector install again. This did not work. So I removed the HTPC user & computer from the WHS2011 dashboard a second time, and this time I Restored my HTPC to a system image from before I attempted to load the connector SW onto the HTPC.

I created the user (HTPC) in the Dashboard, then loaded & installed the connector SW on the HTPC, gave all shares Read/Write access. And still the same issue - No Updating of WMP12 folder or loading the Picture Library into WMC. But the extender gets updated????

I used this method in my attempts to fix my WMP12 library (It has worked in the past) - thinking it may be the problem with WMP12 - But it wouldn't update any folders at all from the server. So that is when I restored the HTPC to a pre-WHS2011 system image.

My problem (I believe) is a broken share permission in WHS2011 for my Picture Library.

There is a wealth of options in the WHS2011 Server Manager that I think holds my solution. There is a Files Services/Share and Storage Management section, but I have not started to mess (and possibly break) with this yet. I'm hoping someone familiar with Server 2008 has a suggestion.

Mr Daleo I have watched many of your youtube videos and listen to you on the BYOB podcasts for months, so I would be very grateful for any advice you may have for me. I really have no desire to re-install WHS2011 on my system again.

Sorry for the long post, but I figured more detail is sometimes better than too little.

Thanks

Not sure I follow the entire series of events but I do have a few questions.

1. Did you create your own pictures folder or are you using the default?

2. Did you move or copy any sub folders/folders that where once shared to your pictures folder?

3. Did you check that WHS 2011 identified this folder as a media folder?

4. Did you go to the WMC library from the picturs section and add this particular folder.

Screen shots of your folder structure and erro messages would be helpful.

1) Default Pictures folder in ServerFolders\Pictures and HTPC Library

2) No

3) Yes

4) Yes, I never moved the location (\\SERVER\Picture) same as in WHSv1

can't post any pics from my HTPC currently at work and only log-in to my workstation via log-me-in. I'll post tonght WMC error (not really and error - just says can't find location)

Dashboard Folders:

HTPC shares:

Where I believe the solution may be found:

It seems odd to me that all these location seem to be open. Also, the top two have a blank in the column "Open Mode" I closed these two, but will probably close them all, as I feel this doesn't look right to me? But, maybe it just shows the shared folders (since there is not an actual file name)? WMC is always open & running on my HTPC. I should check this again when I run WMC from my Workstation PC though. BTW, pass the popcorn is the HTPC user name & MC-popcorn is the extender (XBOX360) user name. 2 users - same computer. (In case someone's not familiar with how extenders work with WMC)

Also, have you tested any of these Role Services?

Thanks, BTW, I went 1 1/2 years running WHSv1 without a single post to any forum asking for help. WHS2011 has it's challenges though. B) I'm also the kind of guy that finds weakness in having to read directions. :D (meaning I can figure most things out without help - not that I'm too lazy to read directions)

Thanks for your help.

I would think those locations should be open. For arguments sake, try this.

1. Create a new folder called "Pictures Test". Give everyone read/write access to it. Copy all or a portion of the pictures to it.

2. Go into to the server properties and remove accesss from the the original folder.

3. Go the the HTPC, "right" click in MC and select "manage libraries". Select add location, pictures, other computer and point to the new folder you just created and see what happens. Both your HTPC and extender should see the pictures you just copied in.

One problem I ran into when I was moving drives around is very similar to yours and I solved it by manually moving the data, deleting the folder, letting the system error and tell me a folder is missing, re-creating it and moving the data back and assigning permissions. When you move a folder, permissions get erased and might fix your issue. Just some thoughts.

That's one good thing about using RoboCopy top move data, the permissions go along with the dara.

Thanks for the reply-

I added a new folder (Pictures2) thru the Dashboard. It would not let me choose the drive to add the new folder to. It just choose my largest drive (14T RAID) and so I moved it to a different drive after creating it. Then I copied my picture folders into Pictures2. Gave everyone access. Removed access from my original Pictures share.

Went to my HTPC and added the new SERVER||Pictures2 to my WIN7 Library (through explorer). Removed SERVER||Pictures from my explorer library. Then in MC choose to add the Pictures folder through settings.

But after waiting 20 minutes add seeing No Files get added:

It does not get added. But what's even more messed up is in MC I can view by date and get picture backdrops that are in my Video library files.

When viewing by folder:

I go back to MC/settings/manage library's/and there has not been the folder that I added to Pictures - It just seems it can't find it. But it is accessable and I'm able to edit it Windows explorer's Library. That's why I tested there first before MC. If I can see it there, then MC should see it. I feel there's a permission messed up - not for the folder - but maybe for WMC itself? This should be so simple, it was in v1.

I'm not sure I understand your second paragraph.

Adding manually (Did you NOT add the folder through the Dashboard then?)

I don't get an error saying a folder is missing.

The Server in Dashboard did error when trying to add a folder on a drive of my choice - this seems broken.

I'll create the folder on a different drive & see what developes.

Wow this is a bit strange. For starters you should have been able to add a new folder wherever you wanted so I do not understand why it would not let you. I assume that you assigned permission through the dashboard and not the file manager Second, it almost seems like the may be an issue with WMC. Have you tried this from another PC that has media center. You may have the problem somewhere else other than your WHS. The fact that it reads by date and not folder tells me that this is a filter problem and the problem is not in WHS but rather in MC. Worth trying another PC or laptop if you can get one. Worse case, do a clean install on your WHS and see if that fixes it. What you are experiencing is a first that I have heard of. This is an interesting problem. To summarize my ramblings, try a different PC/laptop and if that does not work, do a clean install of WHS, it does not look like you are far enough to loose much.

My MC HTPC worked great and shares were accessed without issue on v1. After installing 2011 the Pictures and Music not updating began. I thought it may be my HTPC, because my Workstation PC that I also run MC on for testing can access the same shares without issue. So, I un-installed the connector SW on my HTPC - removed the HTPC from the dash board - and re-installed it again. Set up same shares, but still a no go. So then I rolled back to a system image from a month ago (before WHS2011) and installed conector, etc. But now I still get the same result in MC and WMP12/MC not updating. I find it hard to believe my HTPC could be the issue as it has worked great for a long time. Also, my Workstation - even after moving & creating the new Pictures share still works great. I can view Pictures by folder and WMP12/MC get updated as they should.

I did clear out the "Manage Open Files" in the Share and Storage Manager in the Server Manager (picture in above post). It just repopulated with all my shares again. I can't figure out why there are several multiple folders/files opened on the same system though?

I'm very puzzled and wish I knew where to look. Event viewer doesn't show errors that I can see. I'm running MSE AV on both PC's and no AV on the server, so that pretty much rules AV issue out. So, I'm ready for something more drastic. I may have to try and re-install of MC on the HTPC or re-install the connector again?

That actually makes more sense as it did not sound like a server problem. Personally since most HTPC's only have an OS, I would try a clean install or if you have an empty drive, just drop it and do a clean install on that to see if that clears up the problem. Good luck.

I assume only the HTPC has the Xbox extender running off it? That appears to be the only difference between the two WMC systems (besides one working correctly and the other not...)

Have you tried either adding the extender to your Win7 workstation and/or removing it from your HTPC to see if it makes a difference? I am wondering if the multiple access is causing an open file conflict. Perhaps you need to add the files prior to the extender software being available.
