FreeNAS with RAID B120i - bad idea

Hello,

Back 6 years ago, I've installed FreeNAS on a USB Stick and added 4xHDD in my HP MS Gen8.

The problem is that I added them using RAID controller. :(

I've defined 2 RAID1 groups.

Can I disable RAID controller and use FreeNAS to control my drives without loosing my data?

Yes, FreeNAS does not like RAID controllers. Unfortunately, HPE Dynamic RAID controllers, like the B120i, do not have the same features as the HPE Smart Array controllers, like mirror splitting.

Back up all of your data before trying anything!

If this were me, I would remove the second drive in each RAID1 mirror, one at a time. Basically simulating a drive failure. Remove a drive, power up the server, walk through error messages, confirm it boots and functions properly. Power down and repeat, breaking the other mirror. Once you confirm you are running with only two drives, I would power down and switch the B120i to AHCI, to see if the server will boot and run in that mode.

Back up all of your data before trying anything!
