Why not just snapshot the VM's?

Maybe I missed something while skimming the thread.

Because then you wouldn't know if it worked. Now there are two ways to do it.

Can the snapshots be set up to be taken every night?

Short answer: yes.

Longer answer: you can take a snapshot every five minutes, depending on what software you use as the backside for the VMs. I.E Sun's, err Oracle's VirtualBox lets you take as many snapshots as you have space and desire. Xenserver requires you use something other than the free version to do them at all. Most lean toward the VBox way. Trick is to figure how to automate it, and that depends on the backside as well.

But your point is well taken. It might very well be easier to to have WHS automatically backup each night than remember to take a snapshot. I'd assume the drive space requirements would be similar. Although, since it is a VHD, not sure that WHS can use it's file comparison space saving by not backing up duplicated files abilities. So a VHD snapshot that only saved the file changes might still be smaller size.

P.S. Every time I read a post by Michael M (no-control) I have to resist...urge...to...NewEgg when I read his sig with the 2500K.
