Dave, I can't believe you gave up on backing up 2011. That would have been cool if you let it finish and even tried a restore.

I was sitting here last night thinking...could I install the V1 connector in V2 and have it backing up the server? Looks like a possibility if I wanted to do it.

Yes. That is currently how I am backing up my WHS2011.

Such a great idea. My understanding is that the underlying backup mechanism is point-in-time (Volume Shadow Copy), so it should back itself up fine:

Restore scenarios are a bit tricky to imagine, unless one copy the WHS v1 VM's PC backups elsewhere...but great thought exercise!

Have you tried a restore? I think that is what you have to test to see if it works.

Restore? I prefer faith. That way I can blindly go about my day worry free. :)

I will try and report a restore process.

Worked! Took forever (slow CPU, slow connection) but the backup of my WHS2011 to WHSv1 and restore worked without issue.

Thanks for taking the time to test. That is excellent news. I plan to do VM's so I would be able to back up to each other; or at least back up the primary one.
