SSD and 2.5" to 3.5" adapter advice AHCI or B120i?

Recommended Posts

dynamikspeed

I am looking at getting 2x 250 or 2x 500GB SSD drives to run as RAID 0.

I currently have 1x SATA 2TB 3.5" HD in one of the front slots and a CD Rom Drive connected.

What cheap 2.5 to 3.5" adapters can i get that will allow me to use SSDs in the front slots?

Is RAID 0 only available on B120i or can I setup with AHCI.

What is the difference with AHCI and B120i in terms of performance and reliability?

Will any of these work in the front bays:

Sabrent 3.5-Inch to x2 SSD / 2.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive Mounting Kit

2.5 To 3.5 inch SSD HDD Dock Mounting Adapter Bracket Hard Drive Holder

I am running Hyper-V Server 2019. My VMs are running slow as they are on a 2TB SATA HDD the same as the Hyper-V Server.

I have only started using this properly now it's been off for 2 years so really want to up the performance.

I installed the 1265l v2 Xeon the other day and can't really make use of it.

I may move to Proxmox in the future. I have a CD Rom drive which i have never used thinking of changing that to a SSD as well.

I am unsure what the optimal configuration would be for me.

Can i run Hyper-V from the internal Micro SD or USB and is this the same performance as on a SSD?

I am unsure of the configuration in the B120i interface. My thinking is one of the below options:

1x 120GB SSD ODD Port - Hyper-V Server 2019

2x 500GB SSD Front Bays 1 and 2 RAID 0

1x 2TB HDD SATA Front Bay 3

OR

1x 8GB Micro SD - Hyper-V Server 2019

2x 500GB SSD Front Bays 1 and 2 RAID 0

1x 2TB HDD SATA Front Bay 3

Neither of those adapters will work. They do not align the power and SATA connections properly to engage the backplane.

I am not sure if the B120i  is supported with Hyper-V.

Will this work:

ICY Dock EZConvert Lite MB882SP-1S-3B

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00U57TQ7Q/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_U_x_Dm7WEbV1XR82X

There seem to be multiple versions of 2.5 to 3.5 converters but they all look the same?

I am currently using Hyper-V 2019 on the disk array so assuming i am using the B120i.

See attached my Storage in iLO and Smart Storage Administrator.

It appears that converter will work as it aligns the SATA and power connectors to the same location as a 3.5 drive.

I was not sure about driver support, but it looks like you have it working.
