As the eBay seller who claimed to be in the UK wasn't my new Xeon CPU did not come in time, so I have already installed ESXi and got the server running and working.

can you change the CPU without reinstalling ESXi?

Yes and No... If the CPU's are of the same generation and with the same instruction set It "could" work. Do completely shut down your VM so that they can regognize the different CPU and are not stuck on the old CPU config.

On the other hand. Installing ESXi is just 15 min. of work so don't take the risk. Importing the VM 's is just as quick.

Thanks, but I've already done it, shut down all the guests, put it in maintenance mode, swapped the Celeron for the new Zeon E3-1265L V2. I checked the BIOS was set correctly which it was, rebooted straight into ESXi that read the correct new CPU, out of maintenance mode and started the guests.

Perfect and simple.
