oj88
I still have this venerable HBA and it's been a critical workhorse for my Plex Media Server. It currently has eight (8) WD RED SATA disks behind it using two (2) miniSAS-to-4xSATA cables (one such cable pictured below). The M1015 spec-sheet HERE indicates that this HBA "Connects to up to 16 SAS or SATA drives". My question is, what exactly do I need to purchase in order to extend the HBA's ability to increase the supported number of drives from the current 8 to 16? Is there a downside doing this? To give a bit of background, this M1015 has already been flashed to "IT" mode and all 8 drives behind it are presented as JBOD. I'm using Drive Bender to consolidate the total capacity. schoondoggy
It can support 16 through a SAS expander: https://www.ixsystems.com/community/threads/ibm-serveraid-m1015-cabling-to-support-16-devices.26066/ If you need another 8 drives and you have an open PCIe slot. You could just add another HBA.
oj88
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. So I need a SAS expander. As I was researching for more info about the topic, I stumbled upon this video. Pretty much sums up how it works. I'll just leave it here for everyone's reference.
