Thank but the issue I'm having is compatibility with my microserver.
Since I'm not familiar with server hardware, I dont know what I need and what will work.

So far I have got my server to detect 2 external drives.
Why two idk?
Can CPU limit the number of drives a server can detect???

But with the virus going around, I'm holding off ordering things from china.
And also those blue cables are ultra thin! Not very robust.
But if it comes down to it I think I will try a External Mini SAS 4x 26Pin SFF-8088 Male to 4 7 Pin SATA Cable

That was my next thought as well.
But the sas expander is a full profile card so only just managed to take out my server board and place it outside the main case and reconnect the wires.

And as usual, need SPP and as usual, out of warranty.
So cant download
Damn HP! 🤬  Why restrict firmware updates?! They are important for everyone! not just corporations!

Cant find links to the SPP but just found a link to the older Smart Update Firmware DVD v10.10
So just now downloading that to create a bootable usb to install the firmware for the sas expander

But says you need your smart array on FW 3.30
not sure how to check that though...

Even better I just found someone who's sharing a torrent of the last Gen8.1 SPP that HP have released.
SHA-256 Checksum matches.
Just creating the usb now, might as well fully upgrade my server :D

Not sure if I'm allowed to share the link here.

Bah, just when I thought things were looking up.

So with the SPP I was able to put my P22 into HBA mode
But still it does not recognise the SAS Expander drives.
And with that other SFF8088 adapter, again will only recognise 2 drives.

Also even though I have the firmware update for the SAS Expander in the SPP USB,
it will not install it, again not detecting the SAS Expander.
Tried with both my P222 and LSI cards.
No go with either.

I mean the SAS Expander should be updated via the SPP USB shouldnt it?
Or will I have to go via the Linux boot way?

You do not need the SPP.

HPE only restricts server BIOS downloads.

The firmware is available here:

You are not allowed to share SPP download links here.

You will likely need to update the SAS expander manually.

I cant seem to detect the SAS or update it

SPP USB wont include it in the list in Step 2 Review
And Ubuntu Linux Terminal only shows the P222 card

In that other forum, I read someone posted earlier to attach a 8087 cable to your raid card to port 8C

Still not being picked up.

Does the P222 need to be in Raid mode not HBA?

So if I cant update the HP way, or the manual way
How do I update the card??? Very confusing.....

Well if anyone is following this thread

Couldnt get the SAS Expander to work, got one more thing to try before I stick with the way below.

So have managed to get my server to detect 4 extra drives by using one of these SFF 8088 Male to 4 x SATA cable
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-SAS-SFF-8088-Male-To-4x-SATA-7Pin-Female-with-Latch-Mini-SAS-26PinHost-1M/143434494014?hash=item21655cb03e:g:pP8AAOSwP7xc5jyL

So from HBA external port, directly to the SATA ports on the 4 drives.

Pretty sure not the best option, but seem like the only option if I want to expand so far

8 extra drives, but would really love the 24 extra with the sas expander 😭

FINALLY Got it working!

Thanks to reddit user  skels130

"According to my research, many, if not most, motherboards will not power a paid device without a CPU."

Bought a PCI-e Riser Board that they use for bitcoin mining

and the SAS expander finally worked and updated

Easy way to tell if the SAS Expander will work in your motherboard is:
Turn it on.
If LED R6 is remains Solid Green permanently then your motherboards isnt powering it up fully
If LED R6 is Solid Green for a few seconds, then goes to a continuous blink, then it's powered up properly

Also fixed the 2 drive detected issue.
Once detected by the SPP boot USB, it then shows the drives in the Smart Storage Administrator
From there I cleared the current configuration and set each drive to a separate individual Raid 0 "Array"

Now all external 3 drives connected to the expander are being detected by the server.

So working in win10
Now to test with xpenology

Thanks for all the help
