Which SAS Expander and Controller?

Recommended Posts

bigo93

I have xpenology nas installed on my Gen8 microserver.
I want to expand the number of drives connected to the server
I'm not familiar with server hardware and setups, so I've just guessed what I needed

I bought a P222 Controller card

and a HP SAS Expander Card 487738-001 468405-001

But my server doesnt seem to connect to the disk enclosure with the SAS expander in it.
Are these 2 compatible? Or does it need a specific controller like the p410i?

Or do I need to buy a HBA card like LSI SAS9207-8E
Any help appreciated.

How many drives do you plan on adding?

What disk enclosure do you have?

The HPE P222 is a RAID controller, Xpenology seems to work best with HBA cards.

Most of your hardware choices are defined by what is compatible Xpenology. You will need to research what others have implemented successfully:

An extra 4 at first, but maybe another 4 some time later if I can get this set up.

Enclosure is just an old PC case with an old motherboard in it with the SAS Expander plugged in.
then 4 drives connected to port 2 of the sas expander.

I've looked at a couple of those My PLayhouse videos, but that guy has a rack server, and also knows what he's doing; well knows more about server hardware than I do :P

So replace the sas expander in the case with the 8 drives with a SFF-8088 to SFF-8087 adapter like this one?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Ports-Mini-SAS-SFF-8088-To-36Pin-SFF-8087-PCBA-Female-Adapter-PCI-Bracket-UK/143441465615?hash=item2165c7110f:g:b38AAOSwukRcxWWs

You could use that to make the cabling easier. You will still need a HBA with two external SFF-8088 ports. Also, be sure the cables from this adapter to the drives are fan out cables.

I got this HBS card https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LSI-SAS9207-8E-Storage-Controller-SATA-6Gb-s-SAS-PCIe-3-0-x8/164041702642?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

Installed it in my server and during startup it actually states Product Identifier as SAS2038-IT
Is this correct?
The card is supposed to be a SAS9207-8E???
Or do they use the same controllers?

Even in Win10 Device Manager it shows up as LAS Adapter SAS2 2308 Mustang

Has the seller ripped me off sending me an older card?
Or is this info correct?

Thanks again for the help

NVM, when I started the Avago Config utility it does showup as a 9207-8E card
Now for a newbie to try to understand all these settings if I can :D

Bah still no luck.

Not bought one of those SFF-8088 brackets yet.
But shouldnt my drives still show up if I am using that sas expander card?

I contacted the seller who replied that "this only works with p410i g7 server"

I assume they mean I need that specific HBA card, but that doesnt make sense to me. Why limit to one controller card.
Lights 1,2,3 and 6 light up on my sas expander,
5 and 6 never turn on, even on power up.

SAS2308 is the chip on the SAS9207:

I would not expect it to work.

SAS expanders are only compatible with certain HBA and RAID controllers. You would need to research the SAS expander that you have and determine what cards are compatible with it.

What cables are you using to connect your drives to the SAS expander?

I think I almost have it working now, finally got the server to detect the external drives, though it only detects 2 of them.
Looks like a bad cable, but thats what you get for buying a cheap one on ebay.
Those with those blue wires are just too thin, probably broken connections on the 2 non-working ones.

Setup is this:

HP G1610T Gen8 microserver with 4 hdd drives
LSI SAS9207-4E Host Bus Adapter

Then made a disk enclosure using an old PC case

Now have a SFF-8088 To SFF-8087 adapter in it connected to 4 drives.

The 2 are connected together with a SFF-8088 to SFF-8088 cable

I'm trying to follow someone else's tutorial on making an expandable disk enclosure

They say they have used the same sas expander, but their model is the HP 468405-002, mines a 001
Not sure of what makes them different though
They have a LSI 9201-16i which they say works with their sas expander.
So not sure why mine doesnt.

But as I said not used sever hardware before so, lots of mistakes to make.
