Finally found an E3-1290 V2 for Cheap

Recommended Posts

Around 3 years ago i setup an alert on ebay for Xeon E3-1290 V2

they come up every few months for around £200

I want one but not that much being that i already Have

a few 1155 cpu's already

Xeon E3-1265L v2

Xeon E3-1240 v2

Core i7 3770

Xeon E3-1220 v2

one came up a week ago for £100 put in an offer of £80 and got it

considering they are super rare i think it was a good price

if anyone has a 65w cooler for the gen8 going in the uk for the right price hit me up..

as this thing pulls 68w on a prime 95 large fft load with avx @ 3.8ghz

which is a fair jump from the other cpu's

Its in a desktop atm for testing its a fair jump from around 54w that an Xeon E3 1240 v2 uses

I still think the Xeon E3 1230 v2 is the sweet spot for performance and heat

but couldnt help myself picking up the fastest 1155 cpu

I just ordered a E3-1264L v2 so as to be able to plex better. as the stock celeron is not that great.

Where did you order from? I'm tempted, but being a bit tight!

Does the Xeon E3-1265L v2 make any difference to the fan speed, upgrading from the Celeron default CPU?

I am tempted to order one from eBay but don’t want the problem of roaring fans! Can anyone comment on how much difference it makes from the Celeron, and where they notice this?

Also can anyone answer if Xeon E3-1265L v2 is the best/highest CPU upgrade one can go without affecting fan speed/thermal acoustics?

Thanks in advance 😀

I upgraded first to an i3, then to the E3 1265l v2, all I did was up the fan speed, not to the max though, and I don't notice the increased noise, although mine is in a hallway and not a living space. I think it's the best chip for the gen8 for heat and performance using the stock heatsink.

If you want an absolute perfomance CPU MSG8 can handle there's nothing to blame you for.

But in my hubble opinion... Not sure that worth it:

There's only 23 samples for the 1290 v2 atleast one of them was running very badly so took the average down

a 1290 v2 doesnt score lower than a 1270 v2

As of 15th of April 2020 - Higher results represent better performance
Intel Xeon E3-1290 V2 @ 3.70GHz
Intel Xeon E3-1270 V2 @ 3.50GHz

I just installed it and scored 6909 for the cpu
