Ready to Upgrade My Synology Box

Recommended Posts

PCEddie

Well it is finally time for me to upgrade my Synology that I won at one of the meetups.

I am considering the below Synology NAS.

Synology 6 Bay NAS DiskStation - DS1618+ (Diskless) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CR8RZYY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_1P8mDbKW0G5WD

I am considering six of the below hard drives.

Seagate IronWolf Pro 4TB NAS Internal Hard Drive HDD - 3.5 Inch SATA 6Gb/s 7200 RPM 128MB Cache for RAID Network Attached Storage, Data Recovery Service - Frustration Free Packaging (ST4000NEZ025) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H2FPFW5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_wk8mDbGFQMM2H

What do you all think?

Looks fine but why the Pro's and not the standard disks?

Hey Ed,

That's a good box for sure.

I've filled in a few comparison URL's if anyone is interested.  It all depends on what you want to do with the box as to which is better for you.  Strictly NAS? Docker? Virtualization? Surveillance? Streaming?

I threw in the 1019+ and it's one drive bay smaller but it has a little more power to it. If you want to do all the above you may consider it.

I have the 1019+ and it is a power house.  I've not filled the NVME slots as I'm not doing anything that would take advantage of them.  NAS and streaming use don't really use them as best as would virtualization or file transfers within the NAS itself. It's the beefiest Synology i've ever used for sure.

If you stream video or transcode look at the 1019 a little harder.  If you need maximum bays it can always take an add on expansion bay. The 1618 will also expand and I would look at it if you need more storage now and don't need the horsepower that the 1019 and NVME slots provide. Although, the 1618 is no slouch!

Look at the 1819 if you need more storage up front.

Always a "+" system.  I almost never recommend  NON + system anymore. Whatever you choose you will love.  They are all good boxes and will do mostly the same for most folks.  There are outliers that need the extra stuff every now and then. Docker, NVME, tons of transcoding, etc.

Don't forget it comes with two surveillance station licenses for cameras!  Some folks like to go with more bays just so they can create a volume on 4 drives for data and maybe a mirror or a single drive just for Surveillance Station to use.

interesting, the fps matrix doesn't show the 1019+ as across-the-board dominant.

I wonder if the nvme is sata or pcie. that could make a difference depending on the # of lanes and PCIE version number. my laptop  has such a slot that handles sata or pcie but both have the same speed. :(

seems like 8gb might be able to support only a few vms
