If you have the cache module installed it will expect to see a battery. If you are not going to use it for RAID, I would recommend buying something else. HP RAID cards are not great as HBA's.

Really even if I use each drive as a single raid 00 drive? Which card would you recommend then?

Performance of drives setup as a single drive RAID0 will be fine, but SMART drive information may not be available as it is hidden behind the RAID controller and some pooling software packages don't work well if they can not see the raw drive. If you want to run AHCI, I would recommend a HBA like a LSI 9207 or 9211. For a MS Gen8 4i4e port config works well:

It can be a RAID card or HBA, you may have to load IT firmware for it to be an HBA, but yes it will run as AHCI. I have run one with FreeNAS, you would need to check with Proxmox. I have run FreeNAS in a VM on ESXi and used this controller in Passthrough to the FreeNAS VM.

The LSI 9207 4i4e is kind hard to find in the UK.

What about a LSI 9280? Not sure what the differences are. I'm basically looking for a 4i4e card, and I'm looking to move to Unraid at some point.

Hmm.. seems they are mainly China too... takes forever to arrive. Not sure of my options in the UK!

The 9280 is a RAID card and does not support JBOD, but it can do single drive RAID0. Here is a good guide to help with part numbers for HBA:

https://www.broadcom.com/support/knowledgebase/1211161496893/megaraid-3ware-and-hba-support-for-various-raid-levels-and-jbod-

Here is a list of all LSI cards and their OEM versions:

https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/lsi-raid-controller-and-hba-complete-listing-plus-oem-models.599/

Look for LSI 9217, 9205, 9212.

The original card that people cross flashed to IT mode was the IBM M1015:

https://www.servethehome.com/ibm-m1015-part-1-started-lsi-92208i/

Also watch for HPE HBA, like HPE H222.

Any sort of HP Enterprise enclosures that I could consider to put off the back of a LSI 9217?

i.e. something cheap I can look for on Ebay!

Not worried about size or noise particularly as it will be in a room away from the main house.

Like a DAS or something?
