Parental Control Apps Compared

Recommended Posts

It's almost time to think about this stuff in my household.  I have been using Circle Home by Disney at home but I have unplugged it during all my wifi testing and feel like I would like to put something on each device now.  I'm thinking about location tracking, geofencing, app monitoring, etc.  All those nosey parent type things.  I'll probably still use profiles of some sort on a router for time management.

Just curious if anybody has any experience in this.  I've been looking at Norton the most. I like it because it is unlimited devices.  I'll need to eventually do 4 iPads and 2 phones.  Links below.  There are some other ones too.

Norton - https://fave.co/2TvJfgT

Circle Home - https://fave.co/2RCnCJR

Life 360 - https://www.life360.com/

Family Time - https://familytime.io/

Qustodio - https://fave.co/2Tx2bf1

ESET - https://fave.co/2RFAleK

We first started talking about Circle and ESET on this post:

Not knowing your exact situation re:education devices, but here within the education environment Norton causes many issues for parents and most simply uninstall it. Specifically it blocks the loading of the automatic proxies thus preventing network access, There would be a setting buried somewhere to allow for them but we have not looked into it more than the fact it is a Norton issue as we do not provide support on students personal devices

Great topic.

I need to finalize and deploy Untangle Home Pro. It may not be as easy, but I think I can reach the parental control/monitoring I am looking for with:

Policy Manager

Web Filter

Application Control

Reports

Haven’t found a one size fits all solution either. Using Apple Screen Time largely as a replacement for Disney Circle now. Life360 for real time GPS tracking of mobile devices. Haven’t experimented with anything else yet.

I am also working on a new untangle install. The Synology router does most of that but I still want to have a look. I would like a one stop shop but sounds like that may not be possible. While they are young and getting their first phone I'm going to be super nosey.

We have two school iPads, 2 personal iPads, and 1 phone right now. It's not officially assigned to a kid yet. It's like a floater.

Agree, I was blocking certain stuff through the Deco when I was using that, however completely removing things removes a level of interaction that parents should be part of when it comes to educating children, removing all access to stuff just opens a can of worms further down the road...

I"m reminded of a recent episode Black Mirror. In any case this is a very intricate topic. I worry that some of the products are so deeply tied into the devices that they might themselves represent a risk for intrusion.

I don't support the use of parental control apps that can interfere with children's devices too much, and sometimes doing so will only get even worse results. So I just use KidsGuard Pro to monitor their phones without directly interfering with their activities, and I will talk to them directly when necessary. This is the way I personally agree.

By chance do you happen to work for this company?  Having only one post here makes me think so.  If so what do you do for iOS devices?

Speaking of, there was a shakeup in the iOS world concerning these apps.  I'm sure you have heard by now.

I have yet to see a comprehensive list of the apps in question but one in my list was for sure effected.

OurPact, Freedom, Mobicip, Kidslox, and Qustodio, and more.

I need to go through the app store and dig around some more.  I have also changed some things I'm doing with my kids.  I think I spoke about it on RESET but I am giving more freedom to the kids as long as I still have access to the device and can look at history.  I still will run some sort of gateway control to catch viruses and scams, etc.  I also want to continue to encourage self regulation of usage.  Having said that my kids still don't have official phones.  Just and xbox and iPad.  Phones will come soon and still might do some location type thing on them. My guess is that will also be taken out of the mix with some good behavior.  Not real sure yet.

Openness and self regulation builds a better child in the long run, as long as there are consequences for stuff when they do go off track..
