HP Gen8 Linux base install

Hi,

I have a HP Microserver Gen8 and want to install a plain Linux server - either Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS or CentOS 7.

I don't plan to use any RAID setup - just plain disks

Disks - I have a SSD that could be used in the DVD-SATA and 3,5" SATA disks

I prefer simple and robust solutions

Shall I use SSD in DVD-SATA or 1st 3,5" SATA disk?

What SATA Controller mode should I use? AHCI or SATA Legacy?

What OS works best with this hardware, Ubuntu 18.04 or CentOS 7 ?

....any other good tips or guidance?

AHCI (with AHCI you can use the DVD slot)

AHCI

Centos7.  (I have one server with Centos 7.5 running fine)

@scorpi2ok2 thanks for your reply but have it running now.

I removed the SSD and installed CentOS7 on first 2GB 3,5" SATA using AHCI mode - working just fine and storage is not an issue as I now also have 3 x 4TB in the other slots. It feels like a more robust setup instead of booting SSD (DVD-slot) using USB stick.
