Is this even possible

I have a beast of a laptop that's sitting around and it has 32 the ram and 2 the hard drive

Would think I could use it for a vmserver

What are my chances

Best way to check would be to install ESXi onto a USB drive, plug it in and see. Remember to enable VTx / VTd in the bios.

I suspect it won’t find the wireless card but may still install if it supports the (unplugged) Ethernet you could perhaps use a wireless bridge to make a wired connection if you don’t have a wired link available.

That said though, even if it does work, I’d be tempted to try and sell it and use the proceeds to get a proper server to run your VM’s on - you should be able to get a pretty high spec Xeon processor tower and still have change for some memory and drives

  • 2 years later...

Running my Virtual Center (6.7) through a Dell E6530 with 16Gb RAM and an SSD as a replacement for the HDD, ESXI is installed as the Host platform running from a Flash drive in the USB port, never given me issues - unfortunately ESXI does not support the built in Wifi, if i could get that a second connection I would be happy as a pig in sh!t :P
