ODD and SSD

I recently got a second hand Gen8 and it already has a DVD drive in it, I would like to keep this, and run a SSD for the OS, whilst keeping the 4 drive bays free.

Is there an easy (ish) way to do this, I've read a lot about turning the ODD into a space for an SSD, but none that I can find about having both.

Thanks

Hi Steeve,

I've been running my Gen 8 for several years using AHCI and having the fifth drive in the ODD port.

You need a power converter from floppy to sata (This one would work - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-Pin-FDD-Floppy-Male-To-15-Pin-SATA-Female-Converter-Adapter-Power-Cable-Cord/292227429803?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649  )

You can then follow the guide in this post (I used a USB and not Micro-sd) :

Hope this helps

The DVD on the internal USB with a Slimline SATA adapter and the SSD on the internal SATA port.

Ah, thats great, I couldn't figure out where I could physically connect everything.

Ok, I can try that will a micro sd, as I need the usb for the odd, the guide looks complex, but I'll give it a shot when I've got all the bits.

Thanks for your help.

Here is a thread on using a USB to Slimline SATA adapter for the ODD: https://homeservershow.com/forums/topic/7545-gen-8-usb-slim-sata-adapter-for-odd/
That frees up the SATA port and power connection for a SSD.
You could mount the SSD next to the power supply with one of my brackets or there are many 3D printable versions of brackets.

That's handy thanks, I'll have a look at the brackets, they look very good.

Thanks for your help.

  • 4 weeks later...

Update: All working now, just waiting for a friend to 3D print the bracket, but OOD and SSD all ok.

Only issue I found was running the commands for the bootloader using Powershell failed (as admin), but worked via cmd (as admin), took me a while to figure it out, but good result.

Thanks guys for your valuable assistance.
