16-Bay Build 2021

Is it really 3 years since I thought about this problem? I blame the pandemic!

My latest thoughts have turned to the ASUS ProArt B550 Creator motherboard because it combines:

-          Ryzen processor

-          2x2.5GBE networking (10GBE would have been better)

-          2xThunderBolt 4 ports

For the CPU I’d like either a Ryzen 5700G (65W), or ideally a 5700GE (35W), when they become available.

The CPU must include graphics to avoid using a PCI slot and, since this is a storage build, the lower the electrical power the better – in the footsteps of the AMD processors for the early HP Microservers.

Windows (10/11?) Pro will run on a 128GB NVME drive in the first M.2 slot.

The four onboard SATA connectors will be used for a RAID 0 array of SSD’s, say 500GB, as a 2TB cache area.

The two main PCI slots (x8+x8) will each have an 8-port SATA HBA:

The case will be the new Fractal Design 7 XL:

Say 2x8GB dual channel 3200 RAM, power supply, fans … and lots of cables!

The finished server should take all 16 HDD’s from my four HP Microservers ... well, that's the theory anyway.
