Help me build an entry level mining box

I bet you could get a used Core i CPU for this as well.  I may gut one of my boxes with these parts!

I need to do some research.

I wonder how much bandwidth is actually needed between the system board and the GPU for mining?

What is the minimum number of PCIe lanes required for a GPU to function properly?

Perhaps we can just cut out the back side of x1, x2, x4, x8 slots and if there is clearance, install a x16 GPU in the slot.

Maybe the cheapest route is to recycle and modify an old computer.

I've got an old HTPC I'm going to repurpose for this if the specs are OK.

Silverstone GD06B USB3.0 Micro ATX Case

Silverstone Strider 550W power supply

ASUS Maximus V Gene motherboard

Intel i3-3220T CPU

16 GB Ram

Samsung 840 Pro128GB SSD

HGST 2TB NAS drive

I'm going to pull a Quad tuner out of it and replace it with a video card. What's the hot point for vgu's now? The only expense for this would be the video card so can go a little on the more expensive side for it.

I know you don't want to go back too far for a CPU.  Nice Hash bitches about my first gen core I5 every time it opens. Though since the GPU is a 1060 and doing the work, I just click through each time.

Good point, need to look at mining software requirements.

Second attempt

Used HP Z420 workstation from ebay:

XEON E5-1603 CPU

16GB memory

Total  $200

There are two PCIe Gen3 x16 slots and a PCIe Gen3 x8 slot open ended and a PCIe Gen2 x8 slot open ended:

The 600w PSU may be a bit light and power cabling for graphic cards may be creative.

It has two 6 pin graphic card aux power connections. Support pages recommend 6 to 8 pin converters for GPU with 8 pin AUX power.
