Cannot install Seagate 8Tb drive

I have an 8Tb Seagate drive (st8000as0002) which works fine in my main Linux Mint machine.

When I try to fire it up as a drive in my Gen8 the message "no 48bit driver available. This device won't work in AHCI mode" (or something along those lines) appears.

The machine then tries to boot into Ubuntu but goes in to a boot loop with a message about running a kernel first.

Is the first message a red herring or is there a bios/firmware update that would address this?

I've attached the actual error message as it appears on boot.

"No 48 bit LBA support, so this drive won't work in AHCI mode"

Then it hangs with the message

"Attempting Boot from USB Drivekey (C:)"

After a while it goes in to a boot loop.
