Mainstream support for WHS 2011 ended in 2016

Soooo... I still have a sealed O/S DVD of WHS 2011 and recall that it shares the same core bits as Windows Server 2008R2 and Windows 7. Needing an OS for a unit I want to bring back to life I thought why not use it as a desktop OS, not like I would really break anything anyway if I am not using the WHS features and really it's a heckuva lot cheaper than W10 or W7 for that matter. Did a quick search and found out mainstream support ended in 2016. Does this just apply to security for the features in WHS? Mainstream support for W7 and server 2008r2 has not passed and are still fully supported is the base O/S still supported for security stuff i.e., Wannacry?

thanks!

mainstream is 5 years then 5 years of still getting security updates. you should be good til early 2020. you weren't expecting new features anyway, right?  :)
