My server currently has 4GB of RAM installed which is labelled as:

4GB 1Rx8 PC3L - 12800E

I have a pair of sticks of RAM with from the exact same manufacturer, however they are labelled as

4GB 1Rx8 PC3 - 12800U

With these sticks in, the machine will not boot (even though I know they sticks are good).

Can anyone tell me what the issue is likely to be?

4GB 1Rx8 PC3L - 12800E - Unbuffered ECC (Not Registered), Server Ram

4GB 1Rx8 PC3 - 12800U - Unbuffered non ECC, Desktop Ram

There is also an R for other kinds of servers which would be Registered. basically your ram is for desktops and not servers regardless of the manufacturer.

The PC3L and PC3 U is the difference between Low voltage and Ultra low voltage.
