Boot with USB3

I have Ubuntu server running on my gen8 and love it so far. I have 4 HDDs, one slow 120gb sandisk SSD on ODD port and a faster 240gb SSD on USB3.

I would like to swap the sandisk into the usb3 enclosure and boot off it and put the 240gb SSD on the ODD port for better latency and speed. Now I know the gen8 won't let you boot off USB3 however GRUB in my case is installed onto a SD card which points to the ODD port. Will this trick work with USB3 too? Does USB3 become active as after GRUB is loaded or only after OS is loaded?

linux would have to load drivers for the usb chipset

as there is no legacy support on the nec chipset from the bios
