OneDrive Files On-Demand is rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring who are on Build 16215

Ahhhhh, the beloved OneDrive placeholders.  Those lovely icons in File Manager pointing to a file in the cloud. How we loved those silly things and man it got ugly when Microsoft took them away!  Finally, they are back and you can get it right now.  Well, you have to jump through a few hoops first.

At Build 2017, Joe Belfiore announced that the new OneDrive Files On-Demand feature will be delivered with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. And today, we are excited to announce that OneDrive Files On-Demand is rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring who are on Build 16215. The updated OneDrive client will be rolling out over the next few days but can also be installed from here.

This Insiders Blog article has all the info you need. Basically, get on the fast ring, get 16215 and install the client from here.  If you are not interested in the Insiders Program fast ring it will be pushed out slowly in the future.

" ... man it got ugly when Microsoft took away ..."

Indeed - Joe had to moderate my comments into a separate thread with a small edit and a plea for decency

Anyways I thought NASDAQ:MSFT had solved all the storage problems for people who were too stupid to realise:

- if you have a smartphone or tablet with only 32GB then some of your 500GB will not be available on it unless you are connected to the net

- if you thought unlimited meant more than 1TB then what dictionary are you using?

You're not welcome ... so just go somewhere else!

I'll leave it at that (unless anyone tries to defend MSFT).

The On-Demand OneDrive is so broken.  If you got it to work, great for you.  On 3 separate machines I cannot get the On-Demand piece to take hold.  I check the box, it says On-Demand is Enabled - Nothing.  Go back into Settings, it is unchecked.

Did get it to take hold once, but in reality it decided to download all my files.
