Having used HP servers for the last 20 years I'd say it's absolutely as intended. Their boot times have never been good - a DL380 can take up to 3 minutes. At the end of the day it's a server, it's not intended to be shut down/booted regularly.

I can understand your point. I am working in a big telecom company (Ericsson), when a server is stuck you have to reboot it and that causes a downtime, customers hate it if it is longer. Windows 10 updates sometimes force the server to reboot, and I am in the initial phase of testing different adapters for display and audio, rebooting is more of a hassle. So far so good, the device is on for a month now and it has started behaving. The reboot time is now about 1 minute, which entirely is spent in the post process, windows boots maybe under 10 seconds.

Today I am going to order some memory, the only thing I can upgrade. I posted a question in RAM thread but did not get any answers, is there any difference in performance between Kingston Value RAM KVR24E17D8/16 and KVR24E17D8/16MA. I know that MA stands for Micro-A, what is better?

It's simply the maker of the RAM chips. For server purposes where you can't run them above stock speed, there's no difference

Sorry for not replying sooner.

When I initially tested the P222 it kept the server from booting. Over the past couple of days I have been playing with RAID and HBA cards in the MS Gen10. I was still having issues, until I changed from UEFI boot to legacy boot. In legacy boot I was able to get the P222 to work and a LSI SAS 9261-8i.

Thanks!

Thanks Joe ... used up my daily 'like' limit for the first time today

I see the power users on the forum are already lamenting the loss of iLo and the restriction to a fixed CPU ...

... but those with more modest needs like myself will I suspect like the improvements.

Whether we will like the price remains to be seen!

I was looking at deploying these to remote  sales offices. Without iLO we would have to hire a technician on a full time basis to drive between 15 sales offices at least once a month to do updates, backup, add user accounts to apps, monitor storage utilization, update drivers, and  monitor for hardware failures. Total salary cast for that is about $CDN40k. None of the sales people can be given administrator authority on the server since it allows them to potentially go in and alter data on the application to game their bonuses (We have had that happen). Some of our larger offices will also easily overwhelm the server capacity when we hit 10 to 15 sales people doing product queries at the same time. Our Solution as to  get some DL60 GEN9's with dual processors and a DL360 G10 for larger offices. The toal setup costs us about twice what one year of salary for a tech would and the central IT can sign in remotely and do the admin work.

I purchased one of these awhile back to play with. Needless to say, I modded it. I upgraded to 16gb of ram (for now).

It's got an Adaptec 5805 running 4x2tb disks up front.

Mini-sas SFF8087 cable to 4x2.5" sata enterprise grade hdds in the top of the machine

I used a couiple of sata power splitters, and it works fine.

I don't like CD/DVD roms as they are a waste of usable space & hardware resources, so I bent all of the brackets and guides out of the way to make space for the 2.5" drives.

The hard drives sit right in the top tray, flat and clean and don't move around.

I set up the 2.5" hdds in raid 10 using the onboard raid controller and installed centos7 on the machine.

I configured the Adaptec 5805 + disks in raid 6, installed the adaptec linux software agent, to configure the storage as I didn't feel like rebooting it again, and loaded StoreMan by way of ssh into to the machine using putty and exporting all X11 traffic back to my windows desktop while running xming.

Once the volume was configured, I then could see all the drives up front & in the OS which I then formatted as an XFS file system and mounted it.

I also added an ASmedia 1062 controller (rev 02) so I could attach esata devices to the server, this card was chosen as it supports 8+ port port-multipliers.

I then attached a MediaSonic Probox I had lying around and filled it with 8 1tb hdds to test in a software raid 5 volume.

Then I built a bunch of windows vms on it, and loaded win 7 ent/win10 ent and stood them up.

A note: If you set the cpu in virt-manager for these vms to use qemu64, they tend to use less CPU resources.

Well, it all works fine and has been for a few months now. I do wish the onboard CPU had more cores/threads, but you get what you get.

The next time I'm inside the machine (maybe soon) I'll take some photos of what I did to the inside to fit all those disks. With the 5805 I could probably cram 4 bare ssd's with some circuit & heat protection in there by using a couple more sata power splitters and another SFF8087. I don't think there are many people with 12 disks inside one of these things :)

Hi Folks,

We purchased an HP Micoserver in June 2018. Its still sitting in our workshop. The CPU reads 100% regardless of OS or Disk. So far we have tried Server 2012, 2016 and windows 10. We have used Samsung SSD and WD SATA drives.

HP refuse to provide Support unless we waste more money on HP branded disks. The supplier doesn't want to know.

For us, this is an expensive door stop.

We have used the Gen 8 Micro-servers successfully for many years for multiple applications and indeed still use them. I have used a combination of different OS's and disks and have never had an issue. After removing this useless, slow ... 'new!'.. HP Gen10 from a customer site we have replaced it with an old Gen 8 which performs perfectly. The Gen 10 wasn't able to run a simple Sage 50 database with around 3 users connected..

We wont touch the Gen 10 again and as I type this I am actually trying to find a 'LiveCD' that will allow me to boot the Gen 10 without any disks installed to see if the CPU is still maxed out. Either this is the slowest server ever or it has a fault. Since June we have wasted hours disabling service after service, changing RAM, disks etc etc and nothing has made any difference. There is no obvious hardware fault as it boots and goes through POST perfectly. It just cant handle any sort of task. Actually running the explorer desktop max's it out..LOL

Just my experience folks..

Regards

I assume your Gen10 has a x3216 CPU. For Windows Server OS I would recommend the x3421 CPU. What CPU do you run in your Gen8's?

Hi, Yeah we have the x3216 and CPU cant be replaced.. HP say it is fully compatible with 2012 R2 and 2016.  I wasnt expecting lightening speeds but it shouldn't be maxed all the time with no tasks running. The CPU in the Gen 8 is Celeron G1610T.. so fairly basic..but blows the Gen10 away.

I understand that the CPU can not be replaced, there is another version of the MS Gen10 that has the x3421 CPU, it is almost the same price as the x3216 version. The x3216 and G1610T are almost identical in PassMark benchmarks. How much memory do you have in each server?

One has to ask why you would install multiple OSes when proper fault finding and diagnosis would have shown you the process which is occupying 100% CPU

I need to update the firmware on a HP Proliant Microserver Remote Access Card installed in my N40L.

Can someone please explain what I need to do to create a boot device that will update the firmware on the Remote Access Card?

      Thanks

I installed a BU50N Blu-ray 4K drive in my HPE ProLiant Gen8 MicroServer.  Worked out well, I'm using PowerDVD13 -- I had to restart the "Machine" several times before it saw the ODD but "Machine" finally figured it out.

      Hi there,
I hope this topic fits here just right.
So a few days ago, I moved my Microserver Gen8 to a friend's place and resetted it.
When we set it up with new disks, the raid-creation in OpenMediaVault (Debian 9.6) failed.
`smartctl` tests passed just fine though and vendor-tools also didn't report any drive errors.
      What happened?
      - I start the Raid creation via `mdadm` and after a while (random blocks and times), it fails and the second disk seems to fail (e.g. sda and sdb are creating a raid, then sdb gets "kicked out" and reread as e.g. sdd, sometimes even with only a few GB of space instead of 3TB).
I tried attaching the second disk on ata2 and ata3, but it keeps failing. The one on ata1 works just fine though.
I tried different disks and vendors, but get the same results.
There are some errors in `dmesg`, but I don't know what they mean. I pasted them here: https://pastebin.com/raw/XASQJ6cy
What I did here: I stopped the raid to re-create it, but then didn't do anything for a while and the error still came up.

Can someone help me with this? (As a wild guess, I'd say that somethings wrong with the SATA connections at least on ata2 and ata3).

      Thanks in advance
