Windows server backup to external drive (removal policy)

Recommended Posts

Have been running Windows Server Backups to an external drive dock (eSATA) for a while.  Recently noticed I could not safely eject using the Windows systray option.  Checked the device policy and saw that I had set to "Better Performance (default)" and not "Quick Removal".  Despite this, I was ejecting the backup drives to rotate to the next backup destination drive.

Since changing this removal policy to "Quick Removal", seems my backup performance is significantly worse... much slower.

Do I need to set to QUICK REMOVAL?  What is best practice for rotating between multiple WSB backup destination drives?

so quick removal means it does less caching, supposedly in case of a power failure. assuming you have a ups I would think better performance is ok along with manually ejecting when you go to remove the disk.

Thanks - I've reverted back to the Better Performance (Default) and things are working as expected.
