Hi Gents,

I'm on the way to get one of those nice microservers. I'm planning to get also P222 controller but I'm not sure if it will be possible to use NL SAS drives in the front bays.

That's the spare part number for the backplane 724493-001. From the pictures its visible that physically the ports are SAS but I'm not sure if that's true for the signal part as well.

If someone can confirm or deny is it possible to use SAS drives in the front bays will be great

Tried to search in the forum but without luck so far :) So kindly excuse me if that was already discussed.

Cheers :)

I've never noticed that the plate is SAS, I've got some SAS drives here on my desk, I can take them home and test them tonight if that's of any help, although I suspect someone will probably answer the question before I get that far..

@Trig0r - That will be very good if you can manage it :)

Many thanks in advance.

Yes Sas drives work fine if you unplug the sff-8087 thats plugged into the motherboard and plug it into the p222

there's nothing special about NL Sas drives NL just means you are supposed to spin them down

its just a marketing term to say not for 24/7 use

The formal distinction between online, nearline, and offline storage is:

  • Online storage is immediately available for I/O.
  • Nearline storage is not immediately available, but can be made online quickly without human intervention.
  • Offline storage is not immediately available, and requires some human intervention to become online.

The backlane interfaces are SFF-8482 and that supports both SATA and SAS disks but the HP Smart Array doesn’t support SAS so you can connect in a PCIe card.
