DIY Platform of choice

Hi folks,

what DIY platform would you choose to build a network controlled power switch?

I see Arduino and Raspberry Pi and wonder if there are others and what are their pros and cons?

It depends what you want really.  Do you want a single power switch in one location?  I guess arduino or RPI would be the choice there, but that's alot of soldering.  Do you want a bunch of them all over the place?  In that case, honestly, I'd just use insteon.  If you need a bunch of switches in a single location, they make these nice little PDU units for uses in datacenters.  It's basically a power strip with 10+ outlets, with an ethernet jack, and each outlet is individually controlled.
