Looking to add 4 external drives

Hi guys, Newbie here. I've been a long time listener to the podcasts and a lurker on the forums.

I have a problem i was hoping you guys could help me with.

I have recently built a WHS with 5 internal drives (4 SATA and 1 IDE)

i also have 4 external drives all sata attached over USB.

I am looking to move the drives internally however i only have the 4 sata ports on my MOBO.

Having 3 free 5 1/2" Bays i was looking into adding a 4 HDD bay cage for the external drives and connecting this through a 4 port Pci/PCI-E raid card.

I am looking at something like this

added to this

Can you guys please advise if this will work.

My power supply has 2*4 pin power plugs for IDE drives and 5 sata power plugs.

If I have left something out please let me know, all help greatly appreciated.

Rgds

Just get a PCI SATA card. Your board has two free PCI slots so you can just install one of these.

I had one in my Vail box and it works great.

Do not forget to order molex/SATA power wiring for the additional drives! I assume you will have to split the other connectors from your PSU.

Hey Rob,

As Tim stated, it should work great. I have two similar setups using some different components that work as well. Here are some other options. The punchline is that there are several options out there to choose from. I would caution you about making sure that the unit you put into your 5.25 slots have good air flow.

I have two of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811995035

I have two the of the express versions of these cards. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816104006

Thanks for the help Guys, i really appreciate it.

I have ordered a PCIe raid card with 2 sata ports and a 4 pin molex to dual Sata power adapter. I will remove 1*80 gig drive and install the external 2Tb and 750GB drives. This will have to do for the time being. Eventually i will upgrade the PS and purchase a Cage and another 4 port sata raid card to add 4 more drives.

PCDoc, i completely agree with you when you say to make sure the drives are well ventilated. I will only buy a cage which includes a fan for the disks.

Unfortunately finances dictate that this will have to wait but planning for the future is half the fun.

Thanks again

Rob
